How To Spray Paint Evenly
Have you ever used spray paint? If you have, did it ever have too many splashes in one corner while the other spots were left empty? This happens due to the inability of being able to spray paint evenly. We know how annoying those moments can be. The uneven finishing makes all your effort go down the drain.
But guess what? In just eight (8) simple steps, you can have an evenly painted surface. No, we are not mucking around. These simple steps will help you to learn how to spray paint evenly.
How To Spray Paint Evenly
Tools You’ll Need
- A can/s of spray paint
- Spray paint primer
- Wax & grease remover
- Spare paper
- Painter’s tape
- A piece of cloth
- Gloves
- Safety goggles
Preparations
The first task is to get your workstation ready. To do that, take some spare paper, like an old newspaper and stick it all over the floor with painter’s tape. This will make sure you don’t accidentally colour your surface. Next, grab a wet piece of cloth and rub it on the surface you want to paint. If there is contamination, wipe down with wax and grease remover. This will remove the dirt, and you’ll have an even surface to work on.
Step 2- Take Precautions
Done making all the preps? Now, let’s take some precautions. Wear a google/mask and put on your gloves. This way, your eyes, and hands will be protected from the harmful chemicals.
Step 3- Apply The Primer
The next thing you should do is spray a coat of primer. Before you grab your primer and start working, let us inform you that it does not apply for all surfaces. If you’re working on a table or wall then you have to use a primer. However, if you plan on spraying paint on cardboard paper for a school project, skip it. Now if you’re using a primer, shake the can first. This will make sure it comes out smoothly. Once you shake it a few times, spray one layer of it on your surface.
Then all you have to do is wait for the primer to dry off. It takes from 30 to 60 minutes to completely dry. And once it dries up, move on to the next step.
Step 4- Shake The Spray Can
Shake the can of spray vigorously for about 3 to 4 minutes. This might seem like a lot, and you might complain that your arms will fall off. But we assure you this won’t be the case. Rather, you’ll have an evenly mixed spray, that is ready to be sprayed. To top it off, you’ll even get a perfect consistency. All of this will help you achieve an even paint finish. Now, isn’t it worth shaking the spray can for a few minutes?
Step 5- Test Your Skill
For this step, all you have to do is do a test spray on newspaper. This will help you in two ways. Firstly, you’ll test your skill, and you can practice it till you can get it right. Secondly, you can check if the spray paint is coming out correctly. Practising will also help you get the even surface you want. Because the more you practice, the more control you have over the spray can.
Step 6- Apply A Layer Of Spray Paint

Now comes the main attraction. Applying the spray paint. Don’t be afraid. Just put your spray paint 30 cm away from the surface and start spraying. Here comes the most challenging part. You have to make sure you spray each stroke evenly so that one part does not have too much paint. To do this, move your hand at a steady and easy pace as possible, and go from right to left while doing so. This way, you’ll be able to get the paint well-distributed.
Step 7- Wait Till The Paint Dries
Congrats! You overcame the hard part. Now you can knock off and relax. Why? Well, because you have to wait for the spray paint to dry, and this takes 24 hours. So, carry on with your other projects while the air does its drying magic.
Step 8- Re-Apply The Spray Paint
Once an entire day has passed, you need to apply the second coat of spray. Yes, one wasn’t enough. But don’t worry. This time you’ll have better control, and your previous layer will make it easy to cover all your mistakes. So, take out your spray paint and repaint the surface. Just one more layer, and you’ll have an evenly painted surface.
That’s our take on how to spray paint evenly. We sure hope you’ll try this at least once. So, what’s the wait? Get on and start working your way to an evenly painted surface.
