Can You Paint Over Render?

by

New render and new house. All you have left is the painting of your beautiful dream house. So, can you paint over render or not?

About The Rendered Walls

Before we even go anywhere near the painting, first, we should know about the render itself. Rendered walls come from a process that you might know as wall rendering. You see, this process that we call wall rendering is not that complicated. It’s basically a process where a mixture of wet cement and sand is applied on the wall using a trowel. You might be wondering why do we use these rendered walls in the first place.

Rendering keeps your wall in place and all the bricks together. Also, without any doubt, it covers up the existing wall material that might make your wall look out of order. You can do the rendering yourself too. You just simply need the right materials and right procedures to follow, and you’ll be able to cut the labour costs of rendering too.

Can You Paint Over Render?

Rendered walls are pretty common if your house is built with bricks. But if you’re really worried about painting on the render surface, don’t be. Yes, you can paint over the render. With the right tools and the right kind of paint, you can be an artist of your rendered wall.

Things You’ll Need

  • Power Washer
  • Moss Killer
  • Stabilising Solution
  • Sander
  • Sanding Paper
  • Paint Brush
  • Paint

Step-By-Step Process Of The Painting

There are certain sequential steps that you need to keep in your mind before you start to paint over the rendered wall. You see, if you don’t follow the steps sequentially, the paint might fall off in the future.

Step 1: Clean The Surface

If you have the rendered surface sitting there for a while, you might consider cleaning it first before you even start. So, how can you clean the rendered wall perfectly? Well, you can use power washer. Because power washers provides high pressure on the rendered surface, it mostly cleans everything there is to clean. After cleaning you can add moss killer to the wall if you’re about to paint on an exterior render. It’ll keep your paint on the render by keeping the moss away.

Step 2: Proper Inspection

Checking the surface that you’ll be painting over is one of the most important parts. You see, the render often faces some issues like moss, small cracks, old paint or crack repairs. You’ll need to have an eagle’s eye and inspect every little detail on the rendered surface. Also, if you’ve rendered the wall recently, you might take some off, so let the render set properly first, or else several cracks might appear eventually.

Just like we let the paint set, the same goes for the render. The water in the mixture of the render evaporates completely and then gives you the true side of the render.

Step 3: Repair Any Cracks

If you do find any cracks, get ready to repair them right away. You just need to put a small amount of render on the cracks or holes that you find and even it up. Make sure to give the layer some time to set and make sure that there are no holes or cracks left.

Step 4: Sand The Render

After the whole render is completely dried, you should check to see if the whole wall is even or not. There’s a chance that most of the time, the render is uneven. You just need to use the same old trick of sanding the render.

Step 5: Apply The Stabilising Solution

The stabilising solution, alsp known as the primer, is the most important element that you need to apply on the surface before you start painting on it. You see, the primer increases the adhesion of the paint for you and helps your surface to be more suitable for your paint to set on. After applying the stabilising solution, give it some time to set on the render.

Step 6: Apply The Paint

After the primer is set in its place, it’s time for you to start painting. So, open the paint can and get your paint ready to be applied. You need to remember to stir inside the can after opening it. Stir as long as you can so that the paint doesn’t get stuck and become thick. Now, you should grab your paintbrush and take only a small amount of paint on it. Then, start applying the paint slowly on the render. Don’t take too much of the paint, or you’ll drop the paint on the floor and make a huge mess. After you’re done, let the paint set on the render for some time.

Step 7: Apply A Second Coat If Needed

After the first coat dries on the render, make sure to check if you’ve missed any places or not. If you did miss a place on the render or you don’t feel that you don’t have your desired layer, apply another coat. It doesn’t matter really how many coats you apply, you just need to make sure that you’ve let all of the coats dry properly every time. Or else, it might be a total disaster for your paint, causing it to fall off.
